“Spanish artist Lidó Rico has been interested in the human body even since the beginning of the 1990s, when he was experimenting with his own body, by considering his skin a creative territory. For the past three years, his interest has been manifesting in the area of the human brain, which he portrays from an artistic perspective, departing from a scientific base. In this regard, the Spanish sculptor has collaborated with researches, such as neurophysiologist Kuey Y Tseng, from the Faculty of Medicine of the Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago (RFUMS), and neurobiologist Jose Luis Ferran, from Murcia University, in Spain. Lidó Rico and the two researchers have attempted to give a new vision of the brain, by focusing on functional aspects and specific problems, such as addictions. For example, in his sculptures, Lidó Rico emphasizes brain circuits and regions affected by addictions. The artist illustrates the consequences of addictions on behaviour and memory. He also takes into consideration other areas which are in close connection with addictions or with any other degenerative mental condition, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, Lidó Rico’s creations have a scientific dimension, not just an aesthetic one. In the “Brain Inside (out)” exhibition we can find works from the Genoarchitecture project, started in 2016, where the Spanish artist expands the area of visual arts and intuition, towards the methodical and rigorous neuroscience investigations. This collaboration between Lidó and scientific researchers surely generates new fields of knowledge and a new perception on scientific, but also artistic investigations.” Raluca Băloiu, curator
