Galleries Night 2015

ABOUT

THE WHITE NIGHT OF THE GALLERIES / NAG#9
For additional information: noaptealba@gmail.com

On the night of April 24th 2015 Bucharest is spending another White Night of the Galleries!
Fourteen art galleries and thirty one alternative venues will open their gates during the night of April 24th putting together for the public a dynamic program of exhibitions and events devoted to contemporary art. Now in its ninth edition, the event, initiated and organized by Asociația Ephemair and supported by Raiffeisen Bank, livens the local cultural scene, art galleries, alternative venues and cultural institutions coming together and drawing a new map of Bucharest, a flowing network that expands from one edition to the next, engulfing new spaces and areas of the city that stretch farther from the center. Thus, contemporary culture influences the social structures directly, taking on the changing of the city not just by temporary actions, but by a consistent and lively presence, backed by the responsibility towards the targeted public. Continuing the tradition of the White Night of the Galleries, this year, too, we will invite the public to cover the location line by bike, once again supporting the presence in the city of less invasive means of transportation both in order to cut back urban traffic and to increase comfort in the public space.

Brief history

Twelve galleries in Bucharest took part in the first edition of the White Night of the Galleries in 2007. The 2008 edition reunited fourteen venues. In 2009, at its third edition, their number doubled: twenty-eight venues. In 2010: forty venues. At its fifth edition we expanded the event to include Cluj, a city which has become over the past years a cultural center with a momentous development and which reunited twelve venues on the White Night of the Galleries map during that first year. Meanwhile, Bucharest had reached fifty-four galleries and alternative spaces. NAG#6 included thirty galleries and alternative spaces, and within NAG#7, the 2013 edition, the map expanded to include fifty-four venues. The NAG#8 edition on 23 May 2014 marked a record as far as the number of participants was concerned, including over seventy galleries and alternative spaces.

About the organizer

Asociația Ephemair (www.ephemair.ro) aims at developing cultural projects that promote Romanian and world contemporary art. Asociația Ephemair also takes on a social responsibility and an educating role towards young people by facilitating their access to the culture of their generation through cultural events that are as varied as possible. This year, too, the agenda of the White Night of the Galleries will include, next to the participating galleries’ own program, a series of exhibitions and events produced by Asociația Ephemair. Thus, either by intervening in unconventional spaces, as already shown in October 2014 in the “Art on Display” project, or by producing exhibitions in established contemporary art venues such as MNAC Anexa, we continue to promote contemporary art and encourage emerging artists. 2015 comes with a great challenge for Asociația Ephemair: the opportunity to produce and promote one of the two projects chosen to represent Romania within the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale. Thus, curator Diana Marincu’s project entitled “Inventing the Truth. On Fiction and Reality” (www.inventingthetruth.com) which will show the international public works by artists Michele Bressan, Carmen Dobre-Hametner, Alex Mirutziu, Lea Rasovszky, Ștefan Sava and Larisa Sitar, continues the collaboration they had with Ephemair within the eighth edition of the White Night of the Galleries for the exhibition “Pasaj” (23 May – 12 July 2014, MNAC Anexa).
