MARe/Museum of Recent Art
Bulevardul Primăverii nr. 15

MARe/Museum of Recent Art is the first private art museum built in Romania in the last 100 years. The curatorial program is developed around Romanian contemporary art, at the same time being opened to the international artistic scene, as represented by the three simultaneous exhibitions: the permanent collection of Romanian art (1965-2018), the temporary group show of Romanian art and the temporary solo show of an influential international artist. For these exhibitions, MARe collaborates with museums throughout the country, private collectors, local and international galleries, Romanian and foreign artists. One of the main objectives of MARe is education through the wide range of programs specially designed for this, conceived both for a specialized audience and for amateurs. Open Wed-Mon: 11:00 a.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday Closed

September 27, 2021 Organiser: MARe/Museum of Recent Art Partner: Austrian Cultural Forum Bucharest 18:00-19:00, MARe/Museum of Recent Art’s Garden: Display this Play, artist public talk with Heimo Zobernig moderated by Erwin Kessler 19:00 – 21:00: The official opening of the exhibition. Spirit Fuck Painting will be open between 27 September – 12 December 2021, at MARe/Museum of Recent Art, Primaverii 15, Bucharest. * The prominent artist and Vienna Professor Heimo Zobernig, one of the leading global contemporary artists, will have the first ever exhibition in Bucharest at MARe/Museum of Recent Art. Spirit Fuck Painting is a compact retrospective of his work from 1984 until today. 16 works (paintings and sculptures), and the video Heimo Zobernig Explains to his Double how a Performance is Made (2008, 61’58”) will be showcased in the temporary exhibiting spaces and in the Auditorium of MARe/Museum of Recent Art, during the most bountiful season of autumn 2021, including at NAG (White Night of the Galleries). A crafty configurator of shapes, textures, colors and volumes, Heimo Zobernig curates when he creates art. His work is a deceptive landscaping of plain visual bodies and twisted semiotics, set to show how art abrades the physical and mental environment and vice-versa. Spirit Fuck Painting is neither about spirit, nor about sex, and not even about painting (although somehow it is precisely that, but seen in a bottomless mirror). Spirit Fuck Painting is about reflection as an intercourse with representation – our representation of art, of its means and milieu. On 27 September, before the opening of the exhibition, a public artist talk, Display this Play with Heimo Zobernig, moderated by Erwin Kessler, will take place in the garden of MARe/Museum of Recent Art, from 18.00h to 19.00h. Focused on the tactics and tectonics of the work of Heimo Zobernig, on the way it is made, shown, and seen, the talk will introduce the work of Heimo Zobernig through text and slide show, and it will be followed by a Q&A session. Display this Play will be presented live online too. After the impactful exhibitions Hermann Nitsch and VALIE EXPORT in 2020, MARe is proudly presenting the Heimo Zobernig exhibition in the framework of the generous partnership with the Austrian Cultural Forum Bucharest.
