Gaep
Strada Plantelor 50

Gaep is a contemporary art gallery with a vibrant exhibitions programme featuring the work of established and emerging artists. Founded by Andrei Breahnă (gallerist and cultural manager) and Raluca Șoaita (architect), it was initially named EASTWARDS PROSPECTUS and focused on artistic practices from Eastern Europe. In 2019, it changed its name into Gaep to become consistent with the new international nature of the programme, a result of the connections established over time with the international milieu of contemporary art. The current programme includes artistic practices that reflect various sociopolitical contexts and different generational positions, in an attempt to transcend established borders and circulate artworks and ideas in new ways.

Spanning both gallery floors, the exhibition 'Studies of Gaze' presents a body of new sun prints and videos by Răzvan Anton. Originated from the artist’s exploration of the Minerva Press Photo Archive, in particular photographs of sculptures, models for public monuments and other artistic representations, the works reveal his approach to using these images, which directly results in a subtle undermining of the objectivity of the photographic medium and addresses the act of looking. For Anton, the photographic source provides an opportunity to work with the interpretation of the gaze via selected motifs symbolising political actions of individuals and society at large.
