The city’s photographic image is stretched between timelines in order to reconfigure the urban environment from an assemblage of shapes to an experience of lived spatiality. The city is more than streets, blocks, and shopping centres; it’s a practiced space, which residents and non-residents alike inhabit, move through, build, demolish and rebuild, as well as recollect and pass on to future generations. The documentary nature of photography is not only scrutinised, but playfully turned against through staged images, performance, collage, moving image and installation, to the point where the overlap between fiction and reality is revealed as a more genuine experience of the city than its direct representation. In addition to photographing various urban settings across the globe, the exhibiting artists employ the history of the places they engage with, their own bodies, found objects, and the local residents’ memories as mouldable materialities that extend the solid volumes of the city. An antidote to the image of the globalised, homogenous 21st century city, these artistic practices challenge the viewer’s perception, both from optical and social perspectives, and affirm the human body, beyond mere dweller, as an imaginative maker of space.
