At the same time, through the artistic creations of Ion Barbu dedicated to Sîrbu, the site has become a cultural oasis for the local community.

The Ion D. Sîrbu Cultural Exploitation is an artistic and memorial space in Petrila, dedicated to evoking the life and work of writer and philosopher Ion D. Sîrbu. Set up in his family’s former home, this symbolic “exploitation” transforms personal memory into a collective cultural act through installations, visual interventions, and literary events. It is a place of reflection and creation, where the mining past of the town intertwines with the intellectual vocation of one of Romania’s most profound thinkers. In this space, artist Ion Barbu has created, in memory of Ion Dezideriu Sîrbu, a cultural oasis for the community.

“Light from the Shadow” brings to the viewer a series of visual collages composed of photographs taken in the Jiu Valley—a space steeped in memory, contrast, and renewal. The exhibition explores how the shadows of the industrial past and the imprint of local communities meet fragments of light: delicate, unexpected details that reveal the hidden beauty of the place. Through these collages, fragmented reality is reassembled into a new narrative, where documentary aesthetics intertwine with personal emotion, and darkness becomes the backdrop from which the subtle brilliance of the present emerges.
