The house at Dianei 4 has a complicated history. This history has left marks. In the interwar period, the house belonged to a Mr. Eugen Fenster, whom we have no idea of his personal history whereabouts. It has been nationalized in 1950 and functioned as headquarters for the External Information Direction. After 1990, it still remained a state property, hosting the EID successor institution. Eugen Fenster’s heir recuperated the house in 2007, after which the house remained empty and finally sold.

We have intervened after the capitalism interwar-communism-capitalism post communism succession. The house was empty for many years and in and advance state of degradation. We have kept all we were able to from the old house. While working on it, we have discovered a beautiful, spacious and friendly house. We’ve discovered its secrets and imperfections and started to grow fond of it, with its old lady charm. At the present, we opened the terrace and the bar/club, soon to be open the basement/ lounge and educational space.

It is daily open. Music, poetry, theatre, film, photography, debates. Events with lots of attitude.

Ethnicity. Minority. Stereotype . Nationalism . Segregation. Racism . Hate .

Noi și ei.
Us and them.

For we are the good. They are the evil.
We are the correct ones, the Christians, the honest ones, the ones in our place - they are the crooks, they have no faith, they are the ones who bring the shame on us in Europe.

They don’t go to school, they don’t work, they sing bad music, they have too many children, they are the ones begging in Spain, stealing, attacking honest people, spending time in jail on our expense. And of course, they are the ones responsible for everything wrong in Romania.  Moreover, they confuse the whole world with their chosen appellation: Rom- Romania.
Do you know where the boundary between personal observation and stereotype lies? Do you know ethnic segregation in schools in Romania is normal practice?

Are you aware of the racism that surrounds you? How common are the negative generalizations about Roma? Is racism an alarming phenomenon in Romania? Is there any connection between the real situation of most Roma in Romania and Romanians' attitude towards them? How many times do you pass through people that contradict a priori assumptions we have about Roma? Ever notice them?

At Dianei4, Nona Şerbănescu proposes a series of video and audio materials, prints and installation based on stereotypes and commonplaces that Roma people are facing in contemporary Romanian society. Rom-anian Dream is a project that queries collective mental construction as much as a projection of a relentless, oppressive future of a minority that is to become the majority in the next 50 years.
