Dozens of years ago, just a few hundred meters away from the building which hosts Galeriile Carol nowadays, one of the emblematic areas of Bucharest city was lying around: The Forefathers’ Fair. Being rather a proto-urban space, when medieval-like trade engrafted on some capitalistic forms almost as incipient as the royalty which gives us, the Carol Gallery, a name, this eminently commercial area propagates its area into the postmodern art trade of the proximities, the Carol Gallery implicitly. The way we go today on art safari, the same way those who built and populated this urban zone used to go on goods safari. (The Caragiale’s notorious list remains, if not comprehensive, terming.) What we think these places have in common is the experience of curiosity and knowledge, of searching and meeting an unknown person at least and The Unknown every time: each going out into this fair consisted of encountering the banality in a new shape and the extraordinary in bizarre, intriguing, maybe terrifying shapes, but always memorable. Therefore, we do not promise you (in case you were tempted by) breathtaking meetings in the Carol Gallery, but we aim to give you, with each exhibition or event, the opportunity to congratulate yourself for paying us a visit. When it comes to the artists who we want to give you to admiration (or, why not, to question) and – honestly put – to acquire, we will focus on the emergent ones, who left behind their apprenticeship stage (academic level included, some of them being MA graduates or even Ph.D. level); they search, close to us, in a mutually advantageous partnership, their path to international affirmation! At the moment, we are delighted to have joining us Mirela Ungureanu and Mihaela Mihalache, both originating from or educated in Cluj-Napoca, then the Bucharest-based Mirela Iordache and Petronela Berlea, and as of the 2017 autumn, the sculptor Dragoș Neagoe, a peri-Bucharester. :) All of them under the strategic direction and curatorial guidance of Uca Băloiu, arts historian and critic.
