The former Saxon Bank (Bank of Țara Bârsei) is one of Brașov’s emblematic historic buildings, erected in 1906–1908 to plans by architect Albert Schuller, who also designed the “Coroana” Hotel. Among the city’s few Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) landmarks, it stands on the site of the 16th-century home of Apollonia Hirscher, a famed merchant known for far-reaching trade to Austria and Turkey and for her benefactions to the city. In her memory, the building bears the renowned stag antlers—the family crest—and a façade medallion depicting Apollonia. The original painting, created in 1906 by Brașov artist Friedrich Mieß, was covered around the 1950s and fully restored in 1972 by Gisela Richter, and has been recently renewed.
