The material attribute of his style draws attention to a surface which, together with the volume it gets to be defined by, also gains something both connotative and vital, both organic and corporeal. Dumitru Schiopu's painting, with its impactful or finer textures, with its stratified logic, its movements towards concealment or its overlaps, with its scratchings, flayings and scrapings, pulls the visual art closer to a gestural one, an art in which the act of touch remains visible in the traces it leaves behind and in which one may observe that the eye and the hand have been working together, have been nurturing and taking the lead from each other, not always in perfect sync with one another, but perhaps allowing for a barely perceptible measure of disparity.
