A1 is an important address for Bucharest’s cultural environment. It’s a space where a lot has happened and still happens: exhibitions, (mini)concerts, artist book launches and others the likes of these. What is particular about this place is that it manages to gather people out of the top drawer of the cultural local colour and, more interestingly, that it acts as a catalyst, that it is a place where ideas come up and formulate. And yes, it is also a bistro/bar/restaurant.

Participant artists (potentially): A1’s clients; the project is redarded as a collective work

“Everyone is an artist” is a Joseph Beuys aphorism. I’m submitting a proposal for a collective work that is to be made on a 3 square meter panel mounted in A1’s small upstairs room where those who come at the BAR are to place images that represent themselves. The project’s starting point is the fact that we are the space we credit with our presence and what I’m looking to investigate is the way we choose to mark our existence. In brief, I’m interested in finding out how we decide to self-proclame ourselves: by means of a descriptive label those who read it are invited to participate through addition (not omission) by placing on the panel images/objects that represent a personal mark, something which he/she identifies him/herself with.

The source of the investigation is the Mnemosyne Atlas made by Aby Warburg, an American art historian active at the end of the 19th century and the begining of the 20th century, who put together in his library several panels on which he placed various images in an effort map the ”afterlife of Antiquity”, to allow its spectators to experience for themselves the “polarities” that riddle culture and thought.

The panel will be mounted fot three weeks and daily photographed.

The opening, which coincides with the finishing, since the collective work shall be done, will take place during The White Night of The Galleries.
