Atelier 35
Strada Șelari 13

The history of Atelier 35 can be traced back to a concept authored by the Romanian Artists Union in the 70’s. This materialized as a network of spaces dedicated to experimental art and young artists in several major cities from Romania. The figure 35 suggests, what would have been considered at the time, the conventional limit of youth.

Perioada Expozitie
30.09.2022 - 21.10.2022
The exhibition brings together new works made in an artistic research project, based on mutual knowledge, experiment and exchange between 4 teams of artists with and without workshops, formed by: Roberta Curcă - Anca Mureșan, Marina Oprea - Nicolae Comănescu, Alexandra Ivanciu - Elena Scutaru and Diana Miron – Beniamin Popescu. The Nucleu 0000 Association visited the artist studios in Piața Amzei and Șelari and invited 4 young artists "from the outside", without studios, Roberta Curcă, Alexandra Ivanciu, Diana Miron, Marina Oprea to collaborate with those "from the inside", from the UAP studios: Nicolae Comănescu, Anca Mureșan, Beniamin Popescu and Elena Scutaru. The exhibition opens during the White Night of the Galleries and can be visited until October 21, 2022. Formulated around the notion of the Artist's Studio, "Inopportune Meetings" is a creative context, meant to coagulate the community and at the same time familiarize the scene with the existing problems in the hope of identifying some solutions, having the dimension of a manifesto. The artist's studio is an essential space for creation, the place of work and silence, away from the world. The studio allows artists to experiment, destroy, build, throw away, without value judgments. This separate room we all need to develop creatively, is an increasingly difficult resource to access. The events of the "Inter-Exterior" project try to problematize the lack of creative spaces offered to artists for modest prices. Paying for a workshop should not mean a sacrifice in the life of an artist, reduced to the limit of subsistence by the accelerated changes of neoliberal capitalism. UAP lost more than 50% of its studios after `90 and did not receive any new buildings. With only 300 studios in Bucharest alone and 3000 artists in the Union in this city, and just over 300 spaces in the country for the rest of the 3000 artists, artists have no other option than to rent in the private sector on higher rents and insecure short-term contracts duration. The exhibition "Inopportune Encounters" is part of the Inter-exterior project, which includes a series of events: 2 exhibitions, 4 days of open studios and a conference aimed at familiarizing both the specialized and the general public with the artists' buildings of the UAPR in the center of Bucharest, between September 30 and October 21.
